The answer is even simpler. YES!
That’s the short answer. The longer answer is most definitely yes! And the reasons are as follows.
Office 365 is Microsoft’s cloud deployment of their own Microsoft Exchange email services (and many other services). The email that the overwhelming majority of corporate America uses and for very good reasons. The very same email that many of you had been running internally at some point. We won’t get into a sales pitch about Office 365 here, but would like to focus on why it is important that you back it up.
Microsoft’s infrastructure is impressive. That is an understatement. They have the means, truckloads of cash and highly technical staff, to make it such. Also an understatement. They have gone to incredible lengths to ensure that it is robust, scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant. Their systems are even redundant across geographical boundaries. Which means your companies email is located on many different servers… in many different locations (states and countries). As a matter of fact, your individual email is even replicated within their infrastructure. Pretty impressive, yes? Why in the world would you ever need a backup to all of that?
That’s an excellent question! Well, that’s all wonderful news… for Microsoft. You see, if Microsoft has some type of failure, they have all of this vast infrastructure in place to assure that they don’t lose anything on their end. And therein lies the key! THEY don’t lose anything on THEIR end. In other words, it won’t be their fault! But is that really how email is lost? A hard drive dies? A power failure? An act of nature? Absolutely, for those and many other reasons. Hence the level of effort Microsoft has put into making sure those issues do not stop them from providing the services your business relies on. Well, let’s be honest here… what about… you? What about your business, your staff, your partners, your clients?
Have you ever “cleaned up” your email? A brave endeavor on your part, that any IT department knows leads to the inevitable call “I need something restored”. What about terminated staff? Whether it was on good terms or not. People often “clean up” as they leave… just trying to help. Or when trying to remove all of the “personal” email that was coming into their business account. Or even worse, a disgruntled employee will delete everything on their way out the door.
The point here is us. Not Microsoft. It’s the human factor. Microsoft has made great efforts to ensure that their part in providing these services is protected! What about yours? What about ours?
